Loenbro Technical Institute Offers Quality Welding Training

February 27th, 2018

Spending four years learning a little about a lot of things may get you a college degree and, hopefully, a job. But instead of sitting in a classroom listening to lectures about 18th-century English literature, at Loenbro Technical Institute, you’ll be wearing your protective gear, practicing your welding techniques. Your education at Loenbro is totally focused on the skills needed to gain an in-demand career in welding in just six to 12 weeks.
What began in 2012 as TeachOut, Inc., in Rapid City, South Dakota, was bought by Loenbro, Inc., in 2016 and renamed Loenbro Technical Institute. Founders Paul and Jon Leach are both experienced welders who built their trade school on the belief that quality instruction and education will create skilled welders. It is the only school in the region accredited by the American Welding Society (AWS) as an Accredited Test Facility and by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).

Loenbro Technical Institute is a state-of-the-art facility in downtown Rapid City, designed to mimic the work environments you’ll encounter on the job. The facility includes a lab with dedicated welding booths and prep areas, as well as office and classroom space. When you’re not training, you can take advantage of the great restaurants and shops, as well as the many opportunities the region offers to outdoor enthusiasts.

Loenbro’s program

The Loenbro Welding program offers an ideal balance between classroom instruction and hands-on training to familiarize you with the tools and techniques you’ll need on the job. Program instructors are all industry pros who guide you according to your ability. They offer tips and techniques you’ll use every day in the real world.

When you enroll in Loenbro’s welding program, you’ll spend focused time in the welding shop, working alongside seasoned welders who will help you develop the advanced skills you need to succeed. Certifications are critical to your success as a welder, as they prove to your employer that you meet the highest industry standards. At Loenbro, you’ll earn 10 professional welding certifications in a commercial and industrial pipe and structural welding, and manufacture welding:

  • Welding Tech I and II (AWS D1.1): GMAW 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G and SMAW 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G
  • Welding Tech III and IV: ASME B 31.3 Section IX and API 1104 Butt and Branch

In addition to offering an outstanding welding program, Loenbro has expanded its course and program offerings to include:

  • Electrical training: Train for your journeyman’s license and learn about safety and OSHA standards; electrical codes and equipment; and industrial, commercial and residential requirements.
  • A Facilities Maintenance Technician program: In addition to classroom and lab time, you’ll receive 80 hours of on-the-job training. Learn safety and environmental practices, plumbing, forklift operations and maintenance, and the basics of electricity and power as you prepare to work in a variety of industries.
  • Pipeline Safety Leadership training: With real-life examples provided through videos, role-playing, interactive activities and discussions, this program emphasizes personal accountability and incident prevention. It’s the first and only program of its kind and is expected to reshape the way safety is managed across the industry.

Where you can work

After completing training and receiving certification, you’ll be able to work in various industries, including oil and gas, construction, the automotive industry, boiler making, ironwork, and the military. As the United States works to improve its infrastructure of highways and bridges, more welders will be needed to build, service and maintain them. In addition, welders can work in shipbuilding and repair, on pipeline installation and even at the bottom of the ocean as underwater welders.

How Loenbro is different

By focusing training on specific skills with hands-on practice, Loenbro turns out fully trained welders who are ready to contribute to the workforce on Day 1. Rather than spending most of your time in a classroom learning the basics of English literature or zoology, you’ll be getting your hands dirty in the lab, learning what you need to know to succeed in the real world. And with a 95 percent job placement rate, Loenbro delivers on its promise to train you for a career.

The demand for welders

According to O*NET OnLine, the demand for welders, cutters, solderers and brazers is expected to grow by up to nine percent by the year 2026. Even now, in many states — including South Dakota, Montana and North Dakota — the number of available jobs and employers is higher than the number of skilled welders, making now the perfect time to train for a welding career and a solid wage. Even entry-level welders can earn about $40,000, depending on their location and the work that’s needed.
